This album, released in 1983, was produced by the governments of Grenada and Cuba to document the music of Carriacou Island, which forms part of the Caribbean nation of Grenada. Side A features songs and dances performed during special occasions such as the construction of a grave, moving to a new home, the launching of a new ship, and the night before a wedding. The recording features performances by two of the island’s major big drum groups. Side B features three tracks by the “Quadrilles”, a group consisting of violin, triangle, tambourine, and bass drum, considered one of the key forms of traditional music on Carriacou Island as well as three tracks by a string band, which, in addition to string instruments, sometimes uses readily available metal objects and empty plastic containers as instruments. Believe this is a valuable recording that conveys the music of this small island.
