Led by Soviet underground leader Sergey Kuryokhin, Popular Mechanics was both a concept and a philosophy, operating in a constantly changing lineup, taking on all sorts of forms from trios to full orchestras, brass bands, rock groups, circuses, multimedia spectacles. Released on the Liverpool-based label ARK, this 1987 album is jam-packed from beat exchanges to improvisations using saxophone, water sounds, and synths, as well as abstract aerobics and Soviet song theater. An intense 45 minutes that will capture your imagination. Incredible.
ソ連のアンダーグラウンドシーンのリーダーSergey Kuryokhinが率いコンセプトでもあり哲学であったこのグループPopular Mechanicsはトリオからフルオーケストラ、ブラスバンド、ロックグループ、サーカス、マルチメディア・スペクタクルまであらゆる形態を保ちメンバーを入れ替えながら活動していた。本作はリバプール拠点のレーベルARKよりリリースされたビートの応酬からサックス、水の音、シンセ等を用いた即興模様、アブストラクト・エアロビ、ソビエト歌謡演劇までもりもり詰まった87年作。想像力を掻き立てる強烈な45分。最高です。
