”Filin” music was born in the late 1940s to the 1960s, incorporating contemporary music and jazz harmonies into Cuban pop music such as bolero and trova. This is the debut album, released in 1964, by guitarist Ñico Rojas, a key figure in the Filin movement. Born into a wealthy family, he grew up listening to a wide range of music from an extensive collection and displayed extraordinary guitar talent, though he ultimately chose a career as a civil engineer. Despite remaining an amateur, he honed the expressive style of Filin, alongside his peers, he left behind two albums and other artists frequently covered his compositions. Listening to this album, it makes perfect sense that José Antonio Méndez, the driving force behind Filin has his roots in jazz, while Ñico Rojas, with his classical background, helped popularize the genre in the local scene. A collection of exquisite pieces performed solely on guitar, evoking the rhythms and lyrical spirit of Cuba’s diverse musical traditions. This is the 2012 CD reissue. As always, the wealth of information in the liner notes is truly impressive.
1940年代後半〜1960年代に掛け、ボレロやトローバといった歌謡音楽にコンテンポラリー音楽やジャズのハーモニーを取り入れ生まれたフィーリン。本作はフィーリンを代表するアーティストにも挙げられるギター奏者Ñico Rojasによる64年リリースのファーストアルバム。裕福な家庭環境に生まれ豊富なコレクションから様々な音楽を聴いて育ちながらギターで非凡な才能を見せるものの土木技師の道を選んだという。アマチュアながらも同世代の若者たちと新しい音楽の波である”フィーリン”の表現法を磨き二枚のアルバムを残し、他のアーティストも彼の曲を取り上げたりしていたようです。フィーリンの立役者José Antonio Méndezがジャズにルーツを持つかたわらÑico Rojasはクラシックをルーツにそして界隈に広めたという話もこのアルバムを聴くと妙にしっくりきます。キューバの多様な音楽のリズムや歌心を感じさせながらギターだけで聞かせる至極の楽曲群。2012年のCDリイシュー版。毎度ながらライナーの情報量には頭が下がります。
