American percussionist Mark Nauseef, who has a background with The Velvet Underground and Thin Lizzy, extensive collaboration history, and diverse activities including producing traditional music series from Bali and Java. This album was released in 1984 by the prestigious German label CMP. The opening track “Colotomix” is incredible, starting with hypnotic gamelan and percussion before voices join in, gradually awakening the listener, also features the gentle contemporary sound of "Jones" using marimba, and the boundary-crossing ensemble piece “Language (It's Medicinal)” performed with Walter Quintus and Trilok Gurtu. Combined with CMP's signature sound, it creates a truly magnificent sonic space. Amazing.
The Velvet UndergroundやThin Lizzyに在籍した経歴を持ち数々の共演、バリ島とジャワ島の伝統音楽シリーズをプロデュースするなど多岐に渡り活動してきた米人打楽器奏者Mark Nauseef。本作はドイツ名門CMPからリリースした84年作。まず催眠的なガムランとパーカッションによる演奏から唱えるように歌われ覚醒していく”Colotomix”が凄い、さらにマリンバを用いた優しい響きのコンテンポラリー曲”Jones”やWalter QuintusやTrilok Gurtuらと繰り広げられる越境アンサンブル”Language (It's Medicinal)”を収録。CMPの音像も加わり圧巻の空間が広がります。これは是非ともレコードで聴いて欲しいです。
