This is a 1983 album by American saxophonist Jemeel Moondoc, who played in Cecil Taylor’s band in the 1970s before forming Ensemble Muntu with like a William Parker, Rashid Bakr, the group released the masterpiece First Feeling in 1977, and who has performed with many musicians, including Byard Lancaster and Archie Shepp. The sextet features Roy Campbell (tp), Khan Jamal (vb), William Parker (b), Dennis Charles (ds), and Ellen Christi(Vo). The title track, spanning A1 and B1, is simply outstanding—it builds on an R&B foundation to maintain a steady groove while unfolding in various directions. Christi, who was also one of the founders of the New York City Artist’s Collective, plays a crucial role with her scat singing.
Cecil Taylorに師事し彼のバンドで活動したのち、NYに移ってからは自らのアンサンブルを結成し傑作を残した他、多くのジャズ・ミュージシャンと共演を重ねたアメリカ人サキソフォニストJemeel Moondocによる83年のセクテット作品。メンバーはRoy Campbell(tp)、Khan Jamal(vb)、William Parker(b)、Dennis Charles(ds)、Ellen Christi(Vo)。まずメンバーの才能を凝縮させた30分に迫る長尺のタイトル曲”Konstanze's Delight”が時間を忘れる素晴らしさ。ドラムとビブラフォンの絶妙な交差、ミステリアスなベースライン、自由に吹き荒れるようなトランペットとアルトサックス、そして見事なスキャットがグルーブしながら様々に展開していきます。これだけで満足ですが続くJemeel MoondocとKhan Jamalが嵐のような演奏を聞かせる”Chasing The Moon”がまた圧巻。
