Gabriela, a singer-songwriter who has been a leading female figure in the Argentine rock scene since the early 1970s, maintaining a long and prolific career both at home and abroad. She shifted toward a more experimental sound in the late 1980s, creating the masterpiece "Altas Planicies", which fused a minimal aesthetic with the spirit of South America, and remains active to this day. This album, released in 1997, marked the beginning of a long-standing collaboration with guitarist Bill Frisell known for his own releases on the ECM label, after he became captivated by her music in the early 1990s. It was produced by Lee Townsend, an ECM general manager and Bay Area-based independent music producer, and features contributions from San Francisco avant-garde musicians such as Eyvind Kang. The album achieves a deeply evocative new age folklore" sound, harmonizing her crystalline vocals with acoustic instrumentation that feels warm, pastoral, and ethereal. "Estrella Austral," in particular, is a masterpiece that truly touches the heart. Highly recommended.
70年代初頭よりアルゼンチン・ロック界における女性第一人者として国内外で長きに渡り活躍しリリースを重ね、80年代後半からはより実験的なサウンドへとシフトしミニマルな美学と南米の精神を融合させた超傑作”Altas Planicies”を残し、そして現在も活動を続けるシンガーソングライターGabriela。本作は90年代に入り彼女の音楽に魅了されたECMからのリリースでも知られるギタリストBill Frisellとの長きに渡るコラボレーションの始まりとなった97年リリース作品。プロデュースにはECMのゼネラルマネージャーでもありインディペンデント音楽界のプロデューサーとしてベイエリアで活動してきたLee Townsendが務め、Eyvind Kangなどのサンフランシスコの前衛ミュージシャンが参加しています。浮遊感を漂わせどこか牧歌的で温かみのあるアコースティックな演奏に透明感のある歌声が調和した浸透度の高いニューエイジ・フォークロア・サウンドを完成させています。特に彼女の歌声が心を打つ”Estrella Austral”は名曲。CDというだけでパスするのは正直勿体ない素晴らしい作品。大推薦。
