Finland's jazz giant/percussionist Edward Vesala. This 1985 work was recorded with an orchestra on his own Leo Records label. First of all, “Caliban,” which conjures a drone-like sonic space, and otherworldly jazz piece “Bread For Soul” blending avant and psychedelic elements, are incredible. Other tracks include "Song Of The Witch Doctors," which grooves with varying tempos and rhythms along with the heavy instrumentation, and improvisational jazz piece “Noble Man”. Every track offers a uniquely sonic jazz space. This guy is truly incredible. A rare find today.
フィンランドが生んだジャズの怪人/打楽器奏者Edward Vesala。本作は自身のLeo Recordsよりオーケストラ編成にて録音された85年作。まずドローンのように響きの空間を出現させている”Caliban”、アヴァンとサイケデリックが入り混じるかのように異界のジャズ”Bread For Soul”の二曲が凄い。他にも重厚な演奏と共に緩急をつけながらグルーヴしていく”Song Of The Witch Doctors”や渋いインプロジャズ的”Noble Man”など、どこをとっても特異な音響ジャズ空間。やっぱりこの方は凄い。。。現在入手困難の一枚。
