It’s well known that the legendary Coltrane was deeply fascinated by Indian music, and it’s said that Joachim Ernst Berendt, who produced this record, learned that Coltrane had been studying the structure of Indian music from sitar player Dewan Motihar, which led to this recording. The Dewan Motihar Trio consists of tabla player and  tanpura player, along with 5 members from the Western side centered around Swiss pianist Irène Schweizer for a total of 8 musicians. Mani Neumeier, who would later form Guru Guru, plays drums. Side A features the epic “Sun Love”, a 17-minute track based on raga similar to the key of C minor in Western music. The ethereal sounds of the sitar, and trumpet, saxophone blend together to elevate the spirit. It’s incredible. Side B features “Yaad” a track showcasing Dewan Motihar’s melancholic vocals, the title meaning “lovers separated forever”, and “Brigach And Ganges” a fusion of ancient Eastern spirituality and modern Western jazz named after the Brigach River in Germany and the Ganges River in India. The album also garnered attention for its high-fidelity sound, achieved through the unique multi-microphone techniques of Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, the genius engineer and founder of MPS Records (formerly SABA). These techniques captured the raw, vivid sound of Indian instruments which often tend to sound muffled, without any distortion. Furthermore, the success of a live performance held the following year helped establish the album as a pioneering work in the genres of world music and ethnic jazz. Truly a masterpiece that has carved its name into history.
