The Bashkir Autonomous Republic, now called the Republic of Bashkortostan, is located in southwestern Russia. Its people speak a Turkic language, Bashkir, and are predominantly Muslim, reflecting a diverse ethnic mix. This 1990 album by Orlan is a fusion group formed around Oleg Kireyev, a saxophonist originally from Ufa, the capital of the Bashkir Autonomous Republic, and still active today. The opening track, "Абдрахман" is stunning, featuring an ensemble that combines jaw harp, bird calls, ethnic instrument Quray and symphonic sounds to create a mystical atmosphere. The track “Карабай,” which evolves into an ethnic jazz-rock style, and the meticulously crafted B-side with delicate soundscapes are equally flawless. Great Melodiya piece.
