With the discovery of copper in northern Zambia in the 1920s, the demand for industrial labor increased in rural areas, and as tribes, cultures, and traditions gathered from each town, the musical style also underwent unique changes as they mixed together. This work was released in 1989 and recordings made in 1957 in the huge mining area known as the Copperbelt, which are part of the famous Original Music series in the US. The recordings are a mixture of songs by roving minstrels as well as laborers in the area as acoustic guitars became available from the West. It's absolutly valuable collection of recordings from Zambia, which continued to create a unique musical system even within Africa. All the music can only be heard here. The recordings were made by ethnomusicologist Hugh Tracey, an authority on African music. Amazing.
