Borneo, an island that looms large in Southeast Asia, is about twice the area of Japan and the third largest island in the world. This 1961 release features music from the indigenous Murut tribe who live in northern Borneo, from the Ethnic Folkways Library series. They have a tradition of playing gongs called agaung and bamboo instruments, but what is featured here is a dance and singing competition on a wooden trampoline-like device called a lansaran. Rhythmic repeating creaks and choral harmonies, deep and tasteful gong perfoming, and endearing singing voices. A wonderful recording.
