Braille Records, a legendary indie label based in Wellington, New Zealand, served as a platform for musicians isolated from mainstream music culture to showcase their unique improvisational music and experimental jazz. This 1984 album, the label’s first release, features the improvisational collective Primitive Art Group, whose music has been described as “jazz punk” and emerged from their numerous DIY activities conducted alongside their musical endeavors. The two-disc set, comprising 8 tracks, captures the fruits of their public outreach efforts which reportedly began around 1981, including street demonstrations, performances in bars, and concerts with a semi-racist atmosphere. An ensemble that is both thrilling and warm, having evolved from an accessible, brass-band-style sound into an avant-garde approach rooted in refined improvisation. This is a precious document from New Zealand notable for its pioneering fusion of noise elements with collective improvisation. It appears to have been pressed in extremely limited quantities.
