Loren Nerell, a California-based musician known as a composer and ambient/Balinese gamelan player. This is a private cassette release in 1989, which he left in his early career. On the A side, "The World Spirit", which inserts fragments of world music such as Tibetan Buddhist chants, Gregorian chants, pygmy music, and Muslim songs between synth rock beats, "The Crucible" develops from the spiritual opening to magnificent electronics with drone synths, field material, roaring sounds, and percussion. On the B-side, sublime ambient electronics "Essences", minimal tribal track "Iron Filings" featuring Indian drum, slit drum and rain sticks by percussionist Chuck Oken, Jr. of the instrumental prog band Djam Karet, mysterious and sparkle ethno synth "Cinnabar", and deep organic electronics "Burned Alum". The B-side is particularly stunning. The artwork features medieval woodblock prints and runes.
米カリフォルニアを拠点に作曲並びアンビエント/バリ式ガムランの演奏者として知られる音楽家Loren Nerell。本作は活動初期に残している89年のプライベートカセット作品。A面にはシンセロックビートの合間にチベット仏教聖歌、グレゴリオ聖歌、ピグミー音楽、ムスリムの歌等の世界の音楽の断片を挿入した”The World Spirit”、ドローン・シンセにフィールド素材、轟音、パーカッションを交えスピリチュアルな序盤から壮大なエレクトロニクスへ展開していく”The Crucible”。B面には崇高なアンビエント・エレクトロニクス”Essences”、インストプログレバンドDjam Karetの打楽器奏者Chuck Oken, Jr.によるインディアン・ドラム、太鼓、レイン・スティックをフィーチャーしたミニマルトライバル音響”Iron Filings”、怪しく煌めくエスノシンセ”Cinnabar”、ディープ有機エレクトロニクス”Burned Alum”を収録。特にB面は圧巻の内容。アートワークは中世の木版画とルーン文字が使われています。
